Extended Diploma in Art & Design

Preparation for Higher Education in Art, Design, Media and Performance

The Extended Diploma is an exciting, varied and practical course with expert career guidance which can lead directly into employment in the creative industries or, more often, be used as a progression route into Higher Education and specialist courses in art, design, media or performance. Many students choose this course to commence study in a specialist environment.

Is this the right course for me?

The course is designed to give you a very strong practical knowledge in aspects of Art, Design and Media covering a wide spectrum of disciplines such as Fine Art, Painting and Drawing, Sculpture, Fashion, Textiles, Graphic Design, 3D Design, Video and Photography. If you are undecided about which area you would like to specialise in, this course allows you to firstly experiment and then focus on specific areas within art, design and media. It will allow you to develop your interests and strengths – expert tutors will guide you through all stages of your development. If you are and remain very clear about your career path, you will be encouraged to develop your specialism more fully (for example, a student interested in photography would use elements of photography within printmaking, graphic design, etc).

Course Structure and Specialist Pathways

In Year 2 of the course you will then have the opportunity to define your preferred interests more closely through project work. You will choose your personal area of development within the pathways of Fashion, Costume and Textiles, Animation and Illustration, Fine Art, Film, Photography and Graphic Design. During this stage you will have the opportunity to undertake some exciting specialist workshops to support your chosen area of study. The course culminates in a final major project in which you demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have attained throughout the course.
