This unit introduces you to the School's photographic resources and production facilities. It provides an introduction to analogue and digital image capture, monochrome and colour processing and print production techniques, camera types and operation, and studio lighting and location practice. It covers relevant areas of health and safety, to ensure that you operate safely whether on or off-campus. The purpose is to bring all students to a common platform of technical knowledge and level of competence so that they can access all the photographic resource areas and equipment with confidence and operational awareness.

Outline Syllabus

Demonstrations and practical workshops on:

  • Analogue and digital image capture 
  • Black and white film processing and print production 
  • Colour film processing and print production 
  • Analogue and digital camera types and their operation - small, medium and large format 
  • The studio – lighting and operation 
  • Technical record keeping including PDP and basic professional issues

Method of Delivery
Seminars, demonstrations, group practical workshops, written test.

Aims

A1 To provide a sound knowledge of the School's photographic and image-making facilities.
A2 To ensure that you gain a sound technical photographic knowledge and competence to enable you to progress through the BA Honours course.
A3 To ensure that you acquire a sound knowledge and understanding of relevant health and safety policy and practice.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit you will be able to:

LO1 Work independently and collaboratively as you effectively utilise the School's photographic and image-making facilities.
LO2 Demonstrate a sound level of technical knowledge and competence. 
LO3 Demonstrate a sound awareness and use of relevant health and safety practice.
