Study Abroad Film Production Course Modules

Building on the Autumn Term unit (3 October - 9 December 2011) Fundamentals 1, this unit consists of a series of workshops and seminars which will allow you to explore the fundamental operational and creative practices of each of the major film production departments: Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound, Directing, and Production. This is an opportunity to engage with specialist areas of film making in more depth, enhance your knowledge and abilities in the production process.

At the end of the unit there are a series of diagnostic workshops to allow informed choice of specialisation. These choices of specialisations are examined and discussed with tutors and a selection is made on the basis of a student's aptitude. A limited number of places are available in each specialism, and a competitive application process may be required.

Learning and teaching will be based upon industry practice, and will involve working both on location and in the studio. Continued emphasis will be given to Health and Safety practice in the production environment.

  • Cinematography - camera and lighting
  • Production Design - set design and art direction
  • Post Production and Editing - fundamentals of post production and the art of editing
  • Sound - acquisition and post production
  • Direction - fiction and documentary practice
  • Production - creative producing and production management

Method of Delivery
Studio-based practical workshops, location visits, seminars, independent learning and research, viewings and critiques. Screenings and lectures.

Aims

A1 To develop a fundamental knowledge and understanding of the operation of the major film production departments.
A2 To develop your skills on location, in the studio environment, and in post-production suites in accordance with professional practice.
A3 To provide the opportunity for evaluation of your performance and abilities.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit you will be able to:

LO2 Work effectively on location, in the studio environment and in post-production suites in accordance with recognised professional practice.
