Exploring the Third Dimension
Study Abroad Interior Architecture & Design Modules
Credit Points: 15
Study Time: 150 Hours
This unit is designed to give build on the previous Communication Studies unit and explore techniques of representing three dimensions in two dimensions. The illusion of space created by drawing is fundamental to both the development process and presentation techniques of design, especially architectural design. These drawing often directly serve the needs of a designer, so they are to be explored and developed in parallel to the design studio, but form a separate assessable unit. Ideas and techniques of both free hand and constructed perspective are introduced and practices. Building on the language of architectural drawing, 3D "virtual" space drawings are introduced using digital CAD modelling.
Outline Syllabus
An indicative guide to the content covered by this unit.
- Free hand drawing
- Analytical drawing for design and architecture
- Abstraction through diagramming
- Architectural drawing methods
- Aided (technical) drawing to represent three dimensions
- Introduction to 3D Computer Aided Design
Method of Delivery
Lectures, demonstrations, studio projects
Aims
A1 To understand the representation of 3D in 2D for design.
A2 To broaden the understanding of drawing for architectural design.
A3 To appreciate the appropriate drawing method and media for a design task.
A4 To develop the use of computers in the process of design communication.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit you will be able to demonstrate:
LO1 Knowledge of drawing for architectural design.
LO2 Knowledge of constructed drawing techniques.
LO3 Knowledge of analytical drawing.
LO4 Digital representation of 3D in a CAD programme.
